Winter UHP tires for premium sports cars

Winter sport never felt that moving

Excellent snow performance for outstanding driving pleasure.
Thanks to the special construction of the traction sipes and the new designed snow grooves the interlocking with the snow significantly raises the traction and handling comfort on snow covered roads.

Best braking performance for maximum winter safety.
The blocks of the rib are only separated through thin lateral grooves which form a stiff rib due to the forces while braking. This leads to shorter braking distance espacially for sporty driving in wintry conditions.

Superb dry handling performance for highest steering precision.
Wider and bigger blocks on the outside shoulder increase the contact area which results in larger footprint for maximum control and steering precision while cornering on dry wintry roads.

Exceptional low rolling resistance for reduced fuel consumption.
Due to its combination of innovative compound, profile and construction the WinterContact™ TS 860 S efficiently reduces the rolling resistance for higher fuel saving – without compromising the safety.

Continental SSR Tires

SSR stands for SelfSupportingRunflat Tire

The SSR principle:

Unlike conventional tires, the SSR principle is based on a reinforced self-supporting sidewall. This prevents the inside of the tire from getting pinched between the road and the rim and from slipping into the rim well in the event of a loss of inflation. The SSR's reinforced sidewall enables the car to continue on its way at a maximum speed of 80 km/h (50 mph) for up to
80 km (50 miles), depending on road conditions and vehicle weight.

SSR runflat tires offer crucial advantages

  • With SSR tires you remain mobile in the event of a flat tire. You can reach your destination or tire service facility without the bother of having to replace a flat tire with the spare tire
  • Compatible with standard rims
  • Simple mounting
  • Saves room and weight, and thus fuel, giving you as much as 3 cubic feet more cargo area

Communication between tire and driver

Because of the good riding comfort SSR tires afford, drivers hardly notice any pressure loss in the event of a flat, to increase both safety in the event of a flat and performance during normal driving, the SSR system is supplied together with an inflation warning system – either TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) or DDS (Deflation Detection System), both of which were likewise developed by Continental. These warning systems alert the driver when a drop in inflation pressure requires investigation via a display on the instrument panel.

EU Tyre Label and Efficiency Classes

EU Tyre Label and Efficiency Classes

The European Union has introduced the EU Tyre Label by Regulation (No. 1222/2009) identically and bindingly for all EU member states. It applies to passenger car tyres, light commercial vehicle tyres and heavy commercial vehicle tyres produced after 01.07.2012.

Three different areas are tested: rolling resistance, wet grip and the rolling noise the tyre makes on the road.

The following are not affected by the EU Tyre Label: retreaded tyres, professional off-road tyres, racing tyres, tyres with additional devices to improve traction such as spiked tyres, T-type emergency tyres, special tyres for fitting to vehicles first registered before 1 October 1990, tyres with a maximum authorised speed of 80 km/h, tyres for rims with a nominal diameter of 254 mm or less or 635 mm or more.

With this regulation, the European Union is pursuing the goal of promoting economic and ecological efficiency in road traffic as well as increasing road safety on the one hand, and on the other hand, granting consumers more product transparency and at the same time serving as an active decision-making aid.

Already during the incorporation, experts criticise the fact that the EU Tyre Label unfortunately only shows a few product characteristics. Apart from rolling resistance, wet grip and rolling noise, which are the main focus of EU tyre labelling, tyres have much more important and safety-relevant product characteristics, such as aquaplaning properties, driving stability, service life, braking properties on dry and wet roads, behaviour in wintry conditions, etc.

Tyre manufacturers point out that test results from various institutions and journals remain an important information medium for the end consumer. These tests usually focus on further safety-relevant product characteristics besides the EU standard qualifications for tyre labelling, which are always important for the final customer.

09.11.2023 from Michael Yates
These are great winter tyres which I run all year round ( living in rural Wales). The problem is getting them in the size I need. I generally have to order at least 3 months before I am going to need them so this review is actually for the tyres I bought two years ago and which still have about 5000 miles (8000 km) wear left. The original summer tyres fitted to the car when I bought it new only lasted 25000 miles so these Continentals actually represent good value for money - and they don’t skid on muddy farm tracks in summer. I had a puncture and the runflat function worked well. But these tyres cannot be repaired by the usual method and there was no chance of getting a new pair of tyres in this size (have to replace in pairs on this car). My only option was the ‘slime’ injection which has worked perfectly. No loss of pressure over the last 5000 miles.
18.03.2022 from Claire Hunter
A much more balanced and user friendly tyre than the Pirelli winters they replaced which were supplied by BMW. Less tramlining. More precise grip and steering yet also more comfortable ride. Unable to accurately comment on fuel consumption as I haven’t monitored it that closely. Snow use not really tested this winter in the UK so can’t comment with any true experience.
